A Complete Gutter System Designed for a Classic Gambrel Home

Derry, NH  |  Residential Project — Gambrel Roof

This Derry, NH homeowner needed more than gutters that looked good. The home's gambrel roof creates a large, highly visible roofline, and the drainage system needed to handle New Hampshire rain, snow, and freezing conditions without taking away from the home's classic architecture.

Project Details

Location: Derry, NH
Home style: Classic gambrel roof
Project: Residential gutter installation
Gutters: 6-inch black seamless
Downspouts: 3×4 heavy-gauge aluminum, color-transition black to white
Winter protection: Heat cable in gutters and downspouts
Primary focus: Drainage and winter protection without visual intrusion

The Design Challenge

Because the homeowner wanted the architecture, not the downspouts, to stand out, we changed the downspout color where the system moved from the roofline to the siding.

The upper sections blend with the dark roof while the lower sections transition to white and blend into the home's exterior.

The Solution

We installed 6-inch black seamless gutters that blend into the dark roofline. From the street, the gutters visually become part of the roof rather than creating a heavy line between the roof and siding.

To carry water away without creating a bottleneck, we installed larger 3×4 heavy-gauge aluminum downspouts.

The system also includes heat cables installed in the gutters and downspouts to help maintain a drainage path during freezing conditions and reduce ice buildup in the gutter system.

6-inch black gutters

The larger gutters provide more capacity, while the black color blends into the dark gambrel roof. From the front, the gutter line almost disappears into the roofline instead of looking like an addition attached to the house.

3×4 heavy-gauge aluminum downspouts

The larger downspouts help prevent the system from creating a bottleneck after upgrading to larger gutters. The heavier-gauge aluminum also gives the downspout system more durability, particularly at elbows and connections where winter freezing can put stress on the system.

Heat cables in the gutters and downspouts

This is the piece that really connects the entire system to the gambrel roof and New England weather. The heat cable helps keep a drainage path open through the gutter and downspout during freezing conditions, helping reduce ice buildup and allowing melting snow and water to move through the system instead of freezing inside it.

Color transition designed around the house

The black gutters visually belong to the black roof. But once the 3×4 downspouts move onto the light siding, they transition to white so the larger downspouts don't become the dominant visual feature on the front of the home.

The Result

The result is a larger, more capable drainage system designed for New England weather without changing the character of the home.
