Seamless gutters are fabricated on-site from a single run of metal, eliminating the seams where leaks, clogs, and separations typically occur. Sectional gutters have joints every 10–12 feet that rely on sealant to stay watertight—and sealant eventually fails, especially in NH winters. The upfront cost difference is usually modest and pays back quickly in reduced maintenance and repairs.

It can accelerate oxidation and corrosion on lower-grade aluminum and steel fasteners. That’s why we use heavy-duty .032-gauge aluminum, stainless steel hardware, and proper sealing practices. For oceanfront and near-coast properties, copper gutters are often the best long-term choice—they become more corrosion-resistant as the patina develops over time.

It depends on your roof pitch, square footage, and the water volume your roofline produces during heavy rain. Many homes we see were originally installed with 4- or 5-inch gutters that are undersized for their roof area. We typically recommend 6-inch seamless gutters paired with 3×4-inch downspouts for most NH homes—sized to handle the volume without overflow, even during the heaviest coastal storms.

A properly installed heavy-gauge aluminum seamless system typically lasts 20–30 years in NH conditions. Low-gauge aluminum from box stores can fail within 5–8 years. We use .032-gauge aluminum—thicker and more resistant to denting, sagging, and freeze-thaw stress than the material most contractors use.

For homeowners planning to stay in their home long-term, especially near the coast or in a historic home, copper is hard to beat. Copper gutters installed correctly last 50–100+ years. They don’t need painting, don’t corrode from salt air, and become more protective as the patina develops. Many of our customers tell us it’s the last set of gutters they’ll ever need.

Half-round is a semicircular profile—the traditional shape used on New England homes for centuries. K-style has a flat back and decorative front that looks more like crown molding. Half-round is the historically correct choice for Portsmouth-area Colonials, Victorians, and Capes, and it’s what we install. It’s also easier to clean and less likely to trap debris. For most Seacoast properties with heavy tree cover, yes—but the guard type matters enormously. Micro-mesh guards can get matted shut by pine resin over time. Brush and foam inserts collect needles and make things worse. We recommend perforated aluminum guards for most pine-heavy properties: the surface allows debris to blow off naturally while still flowing high rain volumes efficiently.

Dramatically less often—but not necessarily never. A properly installed perforated aluminum guard system handles 90–95% of debris on most properties. We recommend an annual inspection for most homes with guards, especially after heavy storm seasons. Anyone who promises you’ll never clean gutters again is overpromising.

Overflow usually has one of three causes: undersized gutters that can’t handle your roof’s water volume, clogged downspouts, or a pitch problem where sections are sloped wrong. A lot of homes we visit have 4-inch gutters that simply can’t keep up with a large NH roof during a heavy storm. Upgrading to 6-inch seamless gutters and 3×4-inch downspouts often solves it completely.

It depends on what’s behind them. Gutters pull away when the fascia they’re anchored to has softened from water damage. If the fascia is solid, we can often re-anchor and realign. If it’s soft, we need to do fascia repair before re-installing. Installing new gutters on rotted fascia is a waste of your investment—they’ll pull away again within a season.
